For expressing tree structures, TAO uses exclusively square brackets [ and ].

The practical reason for picking square brackets over any other kind is that on most keyboard layouts they are the easiest to type.

At the same time on average they seem to be more or less the least often used of the common bracketing characters – which matters from the perspective of escape friction.

Otherwise the choice is arbitrary.
